Chelsea's dismal start to their title defence hit a new low in Saturday's early game, with the Blues going down 3-1 to a vibrant Everton side at Goodison Park.
The defeat saw Chelsea condemned to their worst start to a top-flight season since 1986-87, when they had just three points after their first five games. Equally worrying for Jose Mourinho is the fact that his expensively constructed side have already equalled last season's overall tally of three league defeats. It is also the first time that the Portuguese has suffered consecutive Premier League defeats since May 2006.
Everton have super-sub Steven Naismith, who netted a fine hat-trick, to thank for the win. That three-goal haul made the Scottish hitman just the sixth player in Premier League history to bag a treble after coming off the bench and the first since his current team-mate Romelu Lukaku knocked in three in a cameo appearance against Manchester United in May 2013 (in West Brom's 5-5 draw at the Hawthorns).
Meanwhile, title rivals Manchester City have breezed through their first five games of the season. Their hard-fought 1-0 win came courtesy of a last-gasp winner from striker Kelechi Iheanacho who, at 18 years and 344 days, became the third-youngest player to score for his club in the Premier League, after Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge.
City have now won their first five games of a top-flight season for only the second time, 103 years after they first achieved such a feat in 1912. With 11 consecutive league wins under their collective belts, Manuel Pellegrini's men are now closing in on Arsenal's 'Invincible' 14-game record winning streak.
In Saturday's late game, Manchester United shot down rivals Liverpool 3-1 at Old Trafford. After a dull first half which saw neither side manage a single shot on target, the game burst into the life, with French wonderkid Anthony Martial scoring the winner with his first ever shot in the Premier League.
Liverpool have now won just one of their last eight league away games while United can revel in the fact that they have now won six of their last eight top-tier encounters with Liverpool (losing the other two).
Arsenal secured their first home victory of the new season with a 2-0 win against Stoke City. Theo Walcott scored for a ninth successive Premier League season while the fleet-footed forward has now scored 11 goals in his last 11 starts in the top flight.
Playmaker Mesut Ozil put in another impressive display, with the German having now created 76 chances in the Premier League in 2015, more than any other player.
